Who could carry that kind of weight?
It was my tomb
‘Til I met You
All my failures I tried to hide
It was my tomb
‘Til I met You
Then I ran out of that grave
Out of the darkness
Into Your glorious day
You called my name
And I ran out of that grave
Out of the darkness
Into Your glorious day
Now Your freedom is all that I know
The old made new
Jesus, when I met You, whoa, what a day
And I ran out of that grave
Out of the darkness
Into Your glorious day
You called my name
Then I ran out of that grave
Out of the darkness
Into Your glorious day
My sin was heavy
But chains break at the weight of Your glory
I needed shelter
I was an orphan
But You call me a citizen of Heaven
When I was broken
You were my healing
Now Your love is the air that I’m breathing
I have a future
My eyes are open
I ran out of that grave
Out of the darkness
Into Your glorious day
You called my name
And I ran out of that grave
Out of the darkness
Into Your glorious day
We’re going to sing to Him tonight
You win every battle, even in the shadows
Gentle Father, rich in love
You clothe the orphan, and double their portion
Winding like a fountain, moving every mountain
Great Jehovah, the architect
Alpha and Omega, Holy Way-maker
(Come on, sing)
With everything I have
Unto the Great I Am, I’m singing
How great is Your name
With everything I have
Unto the Great I Am, I’m singing
How great is Your name
(Here we go!)
Your body was broken and Heaven tore open
(Lift Him up)
Now resurrected and lifted high
Risen Messiah, glory in the highest
(Oh, sing!)
With everything I have (sing)
Unto the Great I Am, I’m singing
How great is Your name
With everything I have (unto the Great I Am)
Unto the Great I Am, I’m singing
How great is Your name, eh, eh, eh, eh-eh
We sing to You, God
How great is Your name
No other name greater
How great is Your name, yeah
So we’ll sing
Oh, praise the Lamb once slain
Yahweh, we love You
Yahweh, we love You
Oh, praise the Rock of Ages
Oh, praise the God who saves (sing)
Yahweh, we love You (oh, yeah)
Yahweh, we love You
Jesus the King of kings, sing
Yahweh, we love You (sing to the Lord Almighty)
Yahweh, we love You
Your name is Resurrection
Your name is everything
Yahweh, we love You (it’s everything)
Yahweh, we love You (for me, sing it out)
Yahweh, we love You (I feel the room)
Yahweh, we love You
Yahweh, we love You (sing)
Yahweh, we love You
Yahweh, we love You
Yahweh, we love You
Yahweh, we love You
Peace within the chaos, how You sustain us
Breath of Heaven within our lungs
A new sound is stirring and it sounds like
How great is Your name
(Come on, sing)
Oh, Jesus
How great is Your name
We love singing Your name
How great is Your name
I’ve looked everywhere and found no one like You
How great is Your name
How great is Your name
Jehovah Rapha, our healer
How great is Your name
Jehovah Shalom, our peace
How great is Your name
I won’t stop singing Your praise
How great is Your name (so, we’ll sing)
Oh, praise the Lamb once slain, sing
Yahweh, we love You
Yahweh, we love You
Oh, praise the rock of ages
Oh, praise the God who saves
Yahweh, we love You (I feel the Lord, I feel the Lord)
Yahweh, we love You (I feel the Lord)
Jesus, the King of kings (lift Him up)
Yahweh, we love You
Yahweh, we love You (one more time)
Your name is resurrection
Your name is everything
Yahweh, we love You (it’s everything)
Yahweh, we love You (lift Him up, sing)
Yahweh, we love You
Yahweh, we love You (sing it out)
Yahweh, we love You (we love You, we love You)
Yahweh, we love You
Yahweh, we love You (we pour it out-)
Yahweh, we love You (-like oil on Your feet, tonight)
Yahweh, we love You (sing)
Yahweh, we love You
Yahweh, we love You (come on)
Yahweh, we love You (pour out Your love, tonight)
Yahweh, we love You
Yahweh, we love You
Yahweh, we love You
Yahweh, we love You
(Yeah, whoa)
Oh, how we love You
With everything I have
Unto the Great I Am, I’m singing
How great is Your name
Unto the Great I Am
With everything I have
Unto the Great I Am, I’m singing
How great is Your name
For Your mercy never fails me
All my days, I’ve been held in Your hands
From the moment that I wake up
Until I lay my head
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God
You have led me through the fire
In darkest night You are close like no other
I’ve known You as a Father
I’ve known You as a Friend
And I have lived in the goodness of God, yeah
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God
Your goodness is running after, it’s running after me
With my life laid down, I surrendered now
I give You everything, oh Lord
Your goodness is running after, it’s running after me
Your goodness is running after, it’s running after me (oh yeah, oh yeah)
Your goodness is running after, it’s running after me
With my life laid down, I surrendered now
I give You everything
Your goodness is running after, it keeps running after me
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I’m gonna sing of the goodness of God
I’m gonna sing
(All of my life You’ve been faithful)
All my life You have been so, so good
(So good with every breath)
every breath that I am able
(Every breath I’m able)
I will sing (I’m gonna sing)
Of the goodness (of the goodness of God, yes I am)
I’m gonna sing of the goodness of God
Oh, I’m gonna sing of the goodness of God

Discerning God’s Will
Matthew 25
Hi everyone, I’m Dwayne Moore, founder of Next Level Worship International. Welcome to our refocus worship retreat. We have people joining us from several parts of the world. Our theme this year for refocus is Hearts on Fire, and I want to talk with you about something that comes out of that heart on fire, and that’s discerning the will of God.
If we’re going to discern God’s will, we first need to know God. A heart in love with Jesus, a heart that is abiding in him. That’s the key. In John chapter 15 verse 7, Jesus promises that if we abide in Him, and his words abide in us, We can ask what we will, and it will be done. The condition is that we abide. Knowing God’s heart should ignite our own heart.
The foundation for this teaching that I’m doing now is Ephesians chapter 5 verse 17. Paul said, Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do. I prefer the word discern over just knowing God’s will. Think of a student in a classroom. You can sit there passively waiting for the teacher to cram knowledge into your mind, or you can actively engage. See, God doesn’t want us to just act mindlessly, wait for knowledge to come to us. He wants us to proactively go after knowledge, and that is discernment.
Discernment is putting something under a microscope, inspecting it from different angles, thoughtfully. Considering what is before us, Paul tells us we can know what the Lord wants. But we must be mindful, focused, prayerful. Let’s stop and pray right now. Wherever you are. Pray this with me or after me and pray it in your own heart language.
Holy Father, I am your child because I’ve trusted you as my savior. And what I need now is to know you more. Help me, Lord, to discern your will in the next steps for my life. Help me trust you because you are trustworthy. Teach me to understand your will. Amen.
Look with me now at the parable of the talents in Matthew chapter 25. We’re not going to read it, but maybe you already know that story. The master gives his servants talents, which are really sums of money equivalent to years of salary, and then he leaves for a long time. Interestingly, he never tells them what to do with the money. He didn’t give them a manual or give them specific instructions. He just gave it to them and walked away. You see, he expected them to know him well enough to know what to do with the money. He expected them to figure it out. That is the heart of discernment.
If you know the master, you know his expectations. The servants were expected to take what they had been given and make the most of it. We will all eventually give an account for what has been entrusted to us, so it behooves us to figure out what God expects. We may not be holding bags of money, but we have all been given guideposts that can help us discern the gifts that we have been given and that we are meant to steward. To make the most of what he’s given us.
There are 4 areas to consider guideposts that will help you understand God’s will.
The first guidepost are desires. In Psalm chapter 37 verse 4, Psalm 37 says, delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. These are the deepest hopes and dreams that God plants in you. I remember being 9 years old, playing basketball with my friends and my neighbors, and I saw their father come out on the porch and speak lovingly to his children. And in that moment, that just gripped me with this overwhelming desire to be a father myself. I was only 9. I wasn’t looking to be a father. I wasn’t looking for that thought, but God, I believe, planted it in my heart. I was 9 when that happened. It took 20 years for me to get married and have children, but God brought that desire to pass. What has God planted in you? See, I call this the plant and grant principle. He will give you the desires of your heart. That means if you delight in him, he will plant godly desires in you, and then he will give them to you. He will grant them to you. So take a moment now to write down at least one godly hope or dream that is buried in your heart. I dare you—write it down.
The second guidepost are resources. What has God blessed you with? It might be time. You may be in a season now where you can give more time to ministry or to family. It might be your talents like singing or teaching or repairing a vehicle, or maybe spiritual gifts that are given by the Holy Spirit to you. It could be knowledge you have or financial blessings that you possess or relationships.
In 2015 I was flying back home from Africa and I was burdened by the leaders I just trained in Africa and I prayed, God, you need to send somebody over there to help them. I was concerned that no one was teaching them about worship and about prayer. And the Lord, I felt like challenged me in that moment and said, Dwayne, you keep saying that you can’t do it, you don’t have time, send somebody else, but I’ve already blessed you with a network of people, relationships—connect them to the people in Africa. Stop thinking about “I” and think about “we” and that opened a whole door of God’s will through that resource of my relationships. You see, that was a guidepost to help me understand God’s will.
The third guidepost are opportunities. Look at the opportunities that you have right now, right before you in your family. It might be a daily meal you could eat together or a family devotional you could begin to have in your church. What might you be able to fulfill and help in your church? It might not be something you like or prefer, but you can help. You can help, and maybe by giving something to those who are in need. If God has blessed you financially, write it down. What are the opportunities you see around you?
The 4th guidepost is peace. In Colossians chapter 3, Paul said, Let the peace of Christ rule in your heart. The word rule means to act as an umpire. His peace should help us make decisions. If you don’t have peace about a direction, then you don’t move. It isn’t always about what makes sense. It’s about what has been settled in your heart by the Holy Spirit. He may be leading you even if you don’t have some of these other things. You trust him. And you do what he leads you to do. That’s the ultimate guidepost.
So let’s review the guideposts. They are desires, resources, opportunities, and peace. Now let’s think of that practically. You might have the desire but not the resources yet, so maybe it’s not time to pursue that. You might have the desire, the resources and the opportunity, but you just don’t have peace. That could be a signal to stop. These guideposts help move you in the right direction, but they can also act as boundaries. Look back over what you’ve written today and consider these things you’ve written down. Could they be pointing you toward the direction that God wants you to go? Listen to him. Trust him. Follow the peace of Christ.
We’ve talked about these things as guideposts, but they can also be boundaries. The same areas—desires, resources, opportunities, peace—can act as boundaries. If you have the desire and the resources but you don’t have peace, then that is a boundary for you. The same guideposts work in both directions. They can either give you direction, or they can tell you, no, not that way.
Paul experienced this in Asia Minor when the Holy Spirit prevented him from entering. He wanted to go over to Asia Minor. He asked the Lord to go, but the door did not open. In fact, the Holy Spirit prevented him from going. It says that was a boundary for Paul. We need to discern what these boundaries are. In Psalm 16:6, the psalmist says, The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places. In other words, boundaries are not bad, so don’t be upset or depressed because God placed a limit on your life. He loves you, he’s your father, trust him that he has your best in mind. He has a reason for keeping you from going down a certain path.
When God commissioned Joshua in the book of Joshua chapter one, he gave him very specific boundaries. He told him that anywhere from the wilderness to the sea, anywhere that you can go and take the land. Now that was a massive piece of land. But there were still limits even within God’s huge promises—there’s space to work and there’s also these walls for our protection. God created you for a specific reason. There is something that only you can do, so go after that. Don’t waste your life pushing against things that you have no business doing. You’ll just be wasting time.
I learned this personally when I was only 26 years old. At that time I was traveling all over the United States. I was doing 200 to 250 dates a year singing as a worship artist. Now on the outside, every guidepost seemed to be pointing me toward a career as a concert artist. I had the desire, had some talent. I certainly had the opportunities. But I did not have the peace. You see, God dropped a boundary in my heart. He dropped it in there when he spoke to my heart and said, Dwayne, don’t chase that dream. You’re not meant to be a concert artist; that is not for you. Now he didn’t tell me to stop singing or stop using my talents in any way. He just told me to quit chasing after that artist dream. I didn’t know what was next, but I did know what I wasn’t supposed to chase, and that was a boundary in my life and it was permanent. A permanent boundary that God laid down there.
See, you and I need to discern: is the boundary temporary or is it permanent? Recently, our team was in Scotland and our host pulled the car over to show us a famous castle. And while we were there, I said, “Hey, tell us where the wall is that the Romans built, the Roman wall I’ve read so much about.” And he said, “It’s right in front of you.” And I looked up and it was just this grassy knoll, this little hill right in front of us, and it didn’t look like much to me. He said, “That’s the wall.” I said, “That’s the wall?” Yeah, it had been there for hundreds and hundreds of years. It was permanent. And it wasn’t going anywhere. That’s a permanent boundary.
But some boundaries in your life might be like a physical ailment or a situational time that you’re in, and it may just be seasonal. You don’t know—you need to test them. That’s the first thing: test these boundaries. I mean, ask yourself and ask the Lord, “Lord, is this a God thing or is this a lie from the enemy? Or is this just my flesh being fearful or lazy or whatever?”
I invite you to pray with me now. Lord, give me direction. I want to know you. I want to know your will. If there’s anyone here watching this that has not surrendered your heart to Jesus, then do that right now. Let that be today—just say this, pray this prayer: Jesus, come into my life and save me. And for those of us who know the Lord but are struggling with maybe worry or fear about the future, pray this: Lord, we confess our sins before you. We confess our worry and our fear and things that you did not create. We trust you instead. Show us the boundaries in our life and help us know whether they are temporary or permanent and give us the patience to trust your timing. Amen.
To close, I want to give you an exercise to do on your own. You can’t sum this up in just a few minutes like we’ve talked about today. You need to get away. You need to turn off your phone, let your family know you’re going to go away for a few hours and just focus on these guideposts and on these boundaries.
So here’s what you do. First of all, you take an inventory. Take a piece of paper and a pen and write these things down and go back through the things you’ve written today, add to them: what are your resources and your desires and your opportunities and do you have peace? Go through that. It may take an hour or two. Make time to do it.
Secondly, underline the potential guideposts that stand out to you. Of all the things you wrote down on that paper, underline what you think might be a guidepost God could show you the next step.
Third, put a check beside those things that you are investing in, that you have taken time to invest in and to try to make better. And then put an X beside those things that you haven’t done anything with. You’ve just really let them just lay there. You’ve not tried to invest them or make them better or you’ve not taken that talent and improved it in any way. Be honest before the Lord, be honest with yourself. Put an X there.
And finally, pray this prayer before the Lord in your time alone with him. Whatever the Lord has shown you in that moment, embrace it. Don’t complain. Be grateful that he’s spoken to your heart and shown you something. And whatever it is, even for something you don’t like, accept it and say, “Thank you Lord, thank you Lord, help me to really truly thank you in my heart for this.”
And then pray before him in that time alone with him. Pray this: “Lord, help me to take what you’ve shown me that I have and help me invest it for your glory and for your kingdom. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
I hope this has been helpful. Thank you.
Session 1 Questions to Contemplate:
Active vs. Passive: Dwayne talked of discernment as “actively engaging” rather than just sitting back and waiting for God to “cram knowledge” into our minds. In what areas of your life are you currently waiting for an answer from God, and how can you pivot to being more proactive in your discernment?
The 4 Guideposts: Of the four guideposts—Desires, Resources, Opportunities, and Peace—which one do you find yourself leaning on the most? Which one is the hardest for you to trust when it doesn’t seem to line up with the others?
Good Opportunities vs. Godly Peace: Dwayne shared how he had the desire and the talent to be a concert artist, but he didn’t have the peace. Have you ever had an opportunity that looked “perfect” on paper but felt like a “no” in your spirit? How did you handle that, and what did you learn about God’s boundaries?

The Anatomy of a Wound
by Dr. David Edwards
Acts 7:20-38 NASB95
Intro.
If you’ve served in any type of ministry you know what it’s like to go through times of dryness and still have to get up and lead worship. And get up to preach a d teach. On the outside we sing read preach we motivate others all the while hurting in the inside. Outwardly confident inwardly unsure. It’s a struggle because we feel like a fraud. But the pressure to lead keeps us doing what we have to do. Sadly the fire has gone out and nobody knows it, but you know it, you can feel it.
We think we just need more motivation more hype. We embark on a quest to get the fire back. More music more sincerity more believing the promises. But nothing works because fire is not an event. And fake fire never fixed anything.
The real tragedy of it all it that’s it’s possible to do the work of the ministry without the presence of god. It happens every week in churches all around the world. Many become worshipers working with a wound. Are you one of the walking wounded?
We didn’t start out this way. So how do we get back to when there was a real unfiltered passion when we walked in the presence.
This is what brings us to our text. Stephen is preaching and he is telling his audience that every person God sent to them to lead them to freedom, they had killed. Why because they were operating out of a wounded life. Then Stephen uses Moses to give us an anatomy of a wound. The story of Moses is told in full in exodus but here Stephen compresses Moses life so we can see how a wound works it’s way through our life. We see it in 5 points.
1.SIGNIFICANT OFFENSE. V 20-21… “he was set outside”
From the beginning Moses was told he didn’t belong. Hers how a wound is created. A. The wound has a voice that speaks to us. B. We believe it. C. Then make an agreement with it. D. Then we build our life around it. Absence, awareness ,agreement , adjustment. That’s how it happens. Nothing is off limits. Some small event can create a major wound.
- SUBTLE OBSESSION. V 23-26 … 40 years… he supposed … tried to reconcile Moses thought this would help him belong
The wound had been working for 40 years. And it was picking up speed. We use every even to meet our unmet needs. Including ministry. No one can work their way out of a wound. Can’t sing your way out can’t preach your way out can’t serve your way out.
- SUCCESSFUL OPERATION V27-29 ….so Moses fled
He runs to midiean there he becomes a husband, a father and a shepherd for his father in law. Moses built a world where he was accepted. That’s what the wound demanded. Now he spend 40 years there. Another 40 years and the wound is still at work. Moses learn to leverage his wound. Verses 22, 35-38 show us how successful Moses was But success won’t heal the wound.
- SOOTHING OFFER. V 30-33 a flame of a burning bush.
God makes an offer to heal him with an eternal flame. “Take off your sandals” all the places your wound has taken you to look for acceptance in people power position and places. There’s healing in the flame. It burns but it doesn’t consume. It just keeps burning. The heart on fire is found in the presence of Jesus. The flame never dies it continue to supply healing. Jerimiah felt the fire when he said it’s like fire shut up in my bones. After the death of Jesus all the disciples were huddled together in the upper room filled with fear and uncertainty, then .. the fire rested on them and never went out. They were made complete with a flame that rested on them and burned within them. Today that flame is still burning. Some of Jesus followers met him on the road to emnaus and after spending time with him they said “did not our hearts burn within us. The fire continues to burn in us and in His church. Even now God makes you an offer the give your wound to him and meet him heal you with his fire.
- STEPS IN OVERCOMING V33 …. You are standing on Holy ground.
Why because God is there. Isaiah 52:5 “he was wounded for our transgressions” he was wounded for our wounds. You can stop covering it up now. You’re free to stop pretending. To stop making excuses and overcompensating. Jesus took it all. What do we do? Repent ! Release ! And receive healing! Let it happen and discover the fire within that can never be taken. This is the way back to a heart on fire.
- Remember we can’t conquer what we won’t confront. What’s your wound ? where did it first start ? What messages has it been giving to you ?
- The journey to wholeness begins by recognizing where the wound is working in your life. In what ways is wound showing up today? Thoughts, actions, choices in the way you live and lead in ministry ?
- What are some ways you might be using your ministry to make up for what your wound has taken from you?
- The flame is God’s therapeutic offer to heal us. What do you need to repent of so healing can enter ?
- What makes it hard fir you to believe God can heal your wound? Will you tell Him? Are you ready to receive what He can bring into that area of hurt ?
- Take a moment and voice a prayer to ask Jesus for a heart on fire.

We’re going to sing to Him tonight
You win every battle, even in the shadows
Gentle Father, rich in love
You clothe the orphan, and double their portion
Winding like a fountain, moving every mountain
Great Jehovah, the architect
Alpha and Omega, Holy Way-maker
(Come on, sing)
With everything I have
Unto the Great I Am, I’m singing
How great is Your name
With everything I have
Unto the Great I Am, I’m singing
How great is Your name
(Here we go!)
Your body was broken and Heaven tore open
(Lift Him up)
Now resurrected and lifted high
Risen Messiah, glory in the highest
(Oh, sing!)
With everything I have (sing)
Unto the Great I Am, I’m singing
How great is Your name
With everything I have (unto the Great I Am)
Unto the Great I Am, I’m singing
How great is Your name, eh, eh, eh, eh-eh
We sing to You, God
How great is Your name
No other name greater
How great is Your name, yeah
So we’ll sing
Oh, praise the Lamb once slain
Yahweh, we love You
Yahweh, we love You
Oh, praise the Rock of Ages
Oh, praise the God who saves (sing)
Yahweh, we love You (oh, yeah)
Yahweh, we love You
Jesus the King of kings, sing
Yahweh, we love You (sing to the Lord Almighty)

Verse 1:
Were creation suddenly articulate
With a thousand tongues to lift one cry
Then from North to South and East to West
We’d hear Christ be magnified
Verse 2:
Were the whole Earth echoing His eminence
His name would burst from sea and sky
From rivers to the mountain tops
We’d hear Christ be magnified
Chorus:
Oh! Christ be magnified Let His praise arise
Christ be magnified in me Oh!
Christ be magnified From the altar of my life
Christ be magnified in me
Verse 3:
When every creature finds its inmost melody
And every human heart its native cry
Oh then in one enraptured hymn of praise
We’ll sing Christ be magnified
Oh, be lifted high, Jesus
(Chorus)
Bridge:
I won’t bow to idols, I’ll stand strong and worship You
And if it puts me in the fire, I’ll rejoice ’cause You’re there too
I won’t be formed by feelings, I hold fast to what is true
If the cross brings transformation then I’ll be crucified with You
‘Cause death is just the doorway into resurrection life
And if I join You in Your suffering, then I’ll join You when You rise
And when You return in glory with all the angels and the saints
My heart will still be singing, my song will be the same
(Chorus 2x)

TRANSCRIPT:
Good morning! So thankful to Dwayne and the ReFocus team for the invitation and the trust. It means more than you know. Grateful for you guys and your friendship, your leadership, and your heart for pastors.
My name is TC Mooney and I am one of the pastors on the team at The Pointe Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana. And at The Pointe, we like to have a little fun when we study God’s word together. We are responsive and a little rowdy so I need you to continue that spirit of enthusiasm with me this morning. We always start off with a little hootin and hollerin’. So when I ask “how is my rowdy refocus conference doing?” I need you to make some noise! Can you do that? Ok then HOW IS MY ROWDY REFOCUS CONFERENCE DOING?! Glad to hear it!
Now I believe good pastors and leaders share what they have learned personally, and lately I have learned a lot of lessons from my 2-year-old son, Reese. Living with Reese has taught me to… stop expecting things to be… where they belong.
He is always finding creative new places for things that aren’t quite where we think they should go. I will find his toys in drawers and closets. Even half eaten granola bars in our bed from time to time.
Just the other day, I saw as my wife, Kodie, was pouring some cheesy crackers out of a box when one of Reese’s toy dogs fell out… even though it happens all of the time, we still don’t expect it when it happens.
And honestly, many of us didn’t expect some things when it came to following God, when it came to stepping into ministry or trying to lead others to following him.
…even though it happens all of the time… we still don’t expect the hurt
God says, “I will be with you” “I will never leave you” “My yoke is easy”, but I have never met a pastor worth his calling who doesn’t have scars.
The goal of the ReFocus conference is to encourage and energize. They asked me to teach something that will fill you back up and inspire.
So today, I want to try to encourage you, not when you’re winning but when you’re wounded.
So I naturally picked the most inspirational passage of scripture to encourage pastors… a passage… where some pastors die.
You already feel encouraged don’t you? Haha well hang in there.
If you have your Bibles with you and want to follow along we will be taking a look at Leviticus 10. At The Pointe, we have been studying through Leviticus together. It’s a book of the bible that can feel pretty tedious with all these details that can get a little overwhelming but the goal of all these commands from God is to transform a very imperfect people to a holy nation where God’s presence can live in community.
So Leviticus gives the outline for all the procedures, laws, sacrifices for the people to follow and the priests to guide them in and carry out.
Leviticus 10 comes as the Israelite people are still new to this new way of living and having relationship with God. And this is what we see happen:
Leviticus 10:1-2 (NET) – Then Aaron’s sons, Nadab and Abihu, each took his fire pan and put fire in it, set incense on it, and presented strange fire before the LORD, which he had not commanded them to do. So fire went out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them so that they died before the LORD.
There has been a lot of guesses as to what exactly Nadab and Abihu did wrong. Some think they took coals from some place other than the altar God instructed. Others think maybe they were drunk on the job since God specifically forbids priests from drinking while serving just a few verses later.
But regardless of the reason, we know one thing for certain: They brought fire, that God didn’t ask for. The author of Leviticus calls it “strange fire”
And I fear so many you might be burning out in your faith, your calling… because you are burning strange fires that God didn’t ask for.
Maybe mistaking our dreams and desires for God’s will
Trying to launch programs or projects because the people in your church want them now… Trying to make every hospital visit, attend every meeting, fix every marriage, answer every text or direct message…
There was a family in Westlake, Ohio who came home one day only to discover that someone had broken into their house. But as they searched through the rooms and drawers they were surprised that nothing had been stolen, in fact, the house was cleaner than before! Carpets vacuumed, dishes washed, all the tables and counters dusted, cleaned and polished. And left right in the middle of the dining room table was a note from someone named Susan Warren with her address and phone number and a bill for $75!
They had not hired Ms Warren to clean their home. They had no idea who she was so obviously upset they called the authorities who found her at the address she left on the note and arrested her for breaking and entering. I guess she didn’t make a CLEAN getaway…
The news later referred to Warren as The Cleaning Fairy when they discovered she had done this multiple times before! When she was questioned, she claimed she had noticed the front door was unlocked and since she had nothing else to do and needed the money, she let herself in and cleaned their house… it was only fair that they pay her for it.
Too many of us are exhausting ourselves doing work that God never assigned… and we are paying the price…
There are too many needs, too many messages, too many problems, too many opportunities. Your church needs more than you can handle… and that’s the point: You cannot be God
I have to remind myself of this fact when I find myself at the church more than home in the evenings, when someone asks to meet with me and it means missing my daughter’s dance recital. When someone leaves the church because I couldn’t be at their gender reveal party for their baby.
I want to do everything I can but that is a dangerous goal.
Doing what you can will take you beyond what you should give.
Instead of do what you can, do what ONLY you can.
This is what I mean: in your church, your job, your home
There are things that you are uniquely gifted and qualified to do. The things that ONLY you can do. This should be where your focus and energy lies.
And then in the things that can be done by someone else, is where you give opportunities to people that want to grow and serve and support!
A leader’s job isn’t to prove our value by exhaustion, its to equip and empower others.
I have encouraged my team to create something we have affectionately and ridiculously named the Poke Ball. Here is the reason: from what I’m told, it looks like a poke ball from pokemon.
I got this idea from Bill Easum and Bill Tenny-Brittian. The idea is that every leader should take everything they do and boil it down into 4 major categories and then appoint or recruit someone to lead those 4 areas. You direct, invest, and develop this team of four that now lead each of your primary arenas of responsibility. You are investing and teaching and developing these 4 people… then each of those 4 divide their responsibilities into 4 major categories and then appoint or recruit someone one to lead those 4 areas and so on and so forth. What this does is create opportunities for more and more people to get involved in the mission as well as share leadership and decision making. The more someone can participate and even be trusted to lead… the more invested and passionate they will be about your church or business.
You will need help to accomplish the mission and dreams God has given you but remember Nadab and Abihu where consumed by fire God didn’t even want. Have you prayed and sought God about the fires that are burning up your time, your energy, your passion? Don’t let the strange fires, the fires God didn’t ask you to burn, consume you.
After Nadab and Abihu have been burned up in the strange fire, Moses warns Aaron:
Leviticus 10:6-7 (NET) – Then Moses said to Aaron and to Eleazar and Ithamar his other two sons, “Do not dishevel the hair of your heads and do not tear your garments, so that you do not die and so that wrath does not come on the whole congregation. Your brothers, all the house of Israel, are to mourn the burning which the LORD has caused, but you must not go out from the entrance of the Meeting Tent lest you die, for the Lord’s anointing oil is on you.” So they acted according to the word of Moses.
This feels harsh, right? No mourning? No grieving?
Tearing garments is a common practice you see throughout the Bible. Job, Joshua, Ezekiel, Mordecai, Paul, Barnabas, King David they all tear their garments in despair. It was a public declaration of despair. A way of showing that one’s grief was too much to bear, that all hope had been lost. But God tells Aaron he is forbidden… but not just Aaron. He says this of all high priests.
Leviticus 21:10 (NET) – The high priest–who is greater than his brothers, on whose head the anointing oil is poured, who has been ordained to wear the priestly garments–must neither dishevel the hair of his head nor tear his garments.
Why? Because High Priests had direct access to God. They were the only ones that could enter the holy of holies. They had an access to God that no one else had in order to represent the people of Israel before God and to represent God to the people of Israel.
Because they could approach God in such a special way, they could personally approach God’s spirit… there is no situation or challenge or circumstance so final that hope could be cancelled
Elvis Presley was a star like no other. Blending various music style from Gospel to Soul to Rock created a revolutionary sound that electrified audiences and drew massive crowds earning him the title “The King of Rock n Roll”
If you dig in to his story a bit, one of the people credited for both the meteoric rise and the heartbreaking fall of The King was a man called Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis’ manger.
So desperate for riches and fame, Colonel Tom was corrupted with greed to his core. Elvis’ rising popularity was just a means to an end. He took every opportunity to squeeze every dime he could pushing Elvis away from friends and family, scheduling more and more appearances, and selling all the merchandise he could. In fact, Colonel Tom was known to benefit from Elvis’ polarizing music. While his fans loved him, Elvis had quite a large crowd of critics that disapproved of his progressive new style. But Colonel Tom saw an opportunity: at every concert, He not only sold “I love Elvis” merchandise, but Colonel tom, Elvis own manager, to double his sales… would also sell “I hate Elvis” merchandise…
Priests were supposed to be guiding the people in the worship of God. Teaching them to trust and follow God regardless of circumstance or challenge. If a high priest, a man with direct access to the spirit of God, tore his garments in complete despair and hopelessness, it’s like selling “I Love God” shirts on Sunday and “I Hate God” shirts on Monday.
God isn’t telling Aaron “don’t feel”… he is saying “don’t give up on me”
Hebrews 4:16 (NLT) – So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
You have that same high priestly access because of what Jesus did on the cross
You don’t stand at a distance. You don’t need permission. You don’t need an appointment. You can boldly approach the throne of grace.
I know some of you are in it right now. Betrayal. Exhaustion. Financial pressure. Lonely leadership. Silent Sundays.
But don’t rend your garments… don’t give up on Him. You still have access. You still have a God who listens. You still have breath. You still have purpose.
Aaron still had work to do. He had priests to train. A nation to shepherd.
And you so do you… you still have people who haven’t met Jesus yet.
You still have work to do… but the grief is real and support is needed.
Leviticus 10:19-20 (NET) – But Aaron spoke to Moses, “See here! Just today they presented their sin offering and their burnt offering before the LORD and such things as these have happened to me! If I had eaten a sin offering today would the LORD have been pleased?” When Moses heard this explanation, he was satisfied.
Basically, Aaron says, I showed up, I obeyed even though I lost so much… but today is so heavy… this is all I got. And Moses, and God… accept that
Joel 2:13 (NHEB) – Tear your heart, and not your garments, and turn to the LORD, your God; for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and relents from sending calamity.
Rend your hearts, not your garments… you can’t have to pretend your heart isn’t torn…
when the people you invested in leave, when people you thought were with you tear you down when you’re not around, when you are told you’re not deep enough, you’re not relevant, you don’t care enough cuz you didn’t call when they didn’t come for 4 weeks in a row, when the finances are tight but they want more programs and staff, when you get invited to a lunch and know… they are ambushing you with their frustration or spiritual discontent…
don’t pretend your heart doesn’t hurt… but don’t tear your garments… don’t give up hope… don’t give up on God… but how?
How to Guard the Garments:
- You Don’t Ignore The Pain
This isn’t a grin and bear it kind of situation. If you ignore the pain and hurt, it will rot your joy and your calling from the inside out.
You have to grieve. I had a friend tell me once that grieving the process of saying goodbye to what you lost. I always thought grief was what we did when a loved one passed but that’s not the only time we experience loss. We have all had dreams that were lost, relationships that we had so much hope for that abandoned us, respect opportunities, confidence… lost
If we don’t grieve what we had hoped for… those wounds will never heal
And there is so much blessing that God wants to give you… that you can only receive if you do the hard work of healing and saying goodbye. For me, I had to seek out a counsellor, share the hurts of my past and learn how to allow those old wounds to become old memories. Maybe it’s the same for you. Maybe it’s calling and apologizing. Maybe it’s refusing to think that you are owed or have earned some kind of respect or support from someone… Maybe it’s letting someone go of your expectations…
But healing doesn’t happen with denial… it happens with honesty
- You Can’t Serve Alone
Aaron isn’t alone in the calling and responsibilities of God. Moses and Miriam, his brother and sister, lead alongside him. His other sons Eleazar and Ithamar step up. The community supports and grieves for Aaron’s loss.
You need support as well. Let’sl call them the 4 C’s: Champions, Confidants, Collogues, and Collaborators
Champions are mentors and teachers. People that invest in you and develop you. That can share how they have made it through what you are going through now. For me, that is Matt Boone. I have known him for 24 years, he has seen it all, knows it all. He is a voice of support but wisdom and clarity when life feels most chaotic.
Confidants are people that can listen and advise, that you can let it all out and vent. They help carry your burdens that you can’t share with others but also point you back to God. This was a counselor for me for a little while. I had some hurts that I needed support healing from and God used that person to help me find the tools to begin that healing.
Collogues are peers that are fighting the same battles as you but at other places. Other pastors and business leaders you can talk to that can share what they are doing that is working. I my buddy Trevor who has a church in Utah but has the same focuses and approach to doing church as I do, so its incredibly helpful to hear how he has navigated those same issues I face.
Collaborators are the people that fight the battle with you, that help come up with the plan then get in the trenches to help you claim victory.
This is my team, my friends, who I have the pleasure of serving with that help me encourage me and challenge me, everyday as we work to help as many people as possible find and follow Jesus.
There was a catastrophic malfunction on a British Airways Flight 5390 as it travelled from England to Spain. One of the front windscreens on the cockpit came loose and blew out ripping the pilot, Captain Tim Lancaster, right out of his seat and sucked him out of the plane. But one of the flight attendants reacted just fast enough to catch the ejected pilot by the ankles… and he held on tight. Against all odds, that flight attendant kept his grip on the pilots ankles for 20 minutes with no idea if the man dangling outside of the plane was still alive or not. He didn’t let go until they had safely landed the plane and safety personnel told him to release his grip… and to their surprise, the pilot survived… all because his friend wouldn’t let go.
Serving God is tough, life can suck you dry… you only survive because someone else is holding on to you.
- You Won’t Get It All Right
Scripture is brutally honest about Aaron’s failures. We get more bad stories about him than good: the whole building and worshipping the golden calf ordeal, him and his sister Miriam publicly criticize Moses’ leadership and marriage which results in her getting leprosy, he hits the rock instead of speaking to it too and doesn’t get to go into the promised land…
He has a ton of failures… but God keeps using him.
God isn’t looking for perfection from us… In fact, if you can only lead from your victories, then it’s your power, not His.
Dreamworks quickly stepped out of the shadow of Disney and Pixar’s animation supremacy and released hits like Kung-Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon
They were always working on new projects with all kinds of talent vying to be a part of what they had next, but there was one project no one wanted to condemned to.
It was even used as a punishment… if you refused to do things the way the boss asked, you would get stuck on this dead end movie. If your designs and ideas didn’t quite line up with what they were looking for, you would get stuck on this dead end movie. And eventually this hopeless movie had a team of stubborn misunderstood outcasts working day and night to complete something everyone thought would be a failure…
But it was the furthest thing from a failure: Shrek debuted in 2001 absolutely destroying the box office making nearly $500 million and spawning 4 Sequels and 2 spin offs!
But It shouldn’t have been a surprise, what better people to tell a snarky little tale about a stubborn misunderstood outcast ogre… than a bunch of stubborn misunderstood outcasts? Of course it was a success cuz they had lived outcast, they spoke outcast, they knew outcast…
1 Corinthians 1:26-31 (NIV) – Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”
God doesn’t need perfect, in fact, he doesn’t want perfect. He uses the broken and messy because thats really the only kind of people that exist, and our mess makes it clear to everyone that His power at work.
The world is filled with imperfect messy hurting people… but who better to reach wounded people… than people with scars and healed wounds?
You are going to mess up. You probably already have.
But you are not disqualified. You are not forgotten. You are not finished.
Tend the right fires. Guard your hope. Lean into your people.
And don’t tear your garments… dont give up on God… because your scars aren’t the proof you failed… they are the proof you stayed.
Session 3 Questions to Contemplate
“Strange Fire” Check-in: TC warned about “burning strange fires”—doing work God never actually assigned to us. What is one “strange fire” (a project, a meeting, or a worry) currently draining your energy that you need to stop doing so you can focus on what only you can do?
Access vs. Despair: In Leviticus, the priests weren’t allowed to tear their garments in despair because they had direct access to God. Since we have that same bold access through Jesus, how does that change how you view your current “wounded” moments or ministry scars?
The 4 C’s Support Team: TC talked about needing Champions, Confidants, Colleagues, and Collaborators to “hold onto our ankles” so we don’t get sucked out of the plane. Which of these four roles is most lacking in your life right now, and who is someone you can invite into that space?
